Super Tuesday Grab Bag: A Split in LA

So, as you may have heard, CU didn't earn the commitment of highly pursued five-star guard Tyler Dorsey. Instead, the 40-point scoring machine will be attending the University of Oregon. Yes, before you ask, vomiting a little in your mouth is an appropriate reaction to hearing this news.

Not entirely unexpected, it still stings a little bit, not only because of how little I view Dana Altman and his program (and the fact that he stayed in the Pac-12 at all), but because of how much I coveted Dorsey's offensive spark being added to the 2015-16 mix.  Scoring has been a struggle for the team this year (duh), and a little single-guard creativity seemed to be the cure-all headed into next.  Yes, Josh Fortune waits in the wings, but this program still needs more scoring punch from the backcourt.  As Ski has proved this season, going at it alone can only take you so far.

Sadly, however, disappointment is one of life's least fleeting pleasures, so we'd all best get to looking past this. The non-commitment leaves CU's one-scholarship 2015 recruiting class still wide open, although the prospect of advancing the time table on Deleon Brown remains. Beyond that... I... have nothing. Nothing at all.  This really kind of sucks.  Happy Tuesday, y'all!

Monday Grab Bag: Broncos party like it's 1990

I have a strong feeling many reading this won't sympathize, but I had a pretty solid sports weekend.  All the teams I was rooting for (except for the Blackhawks) won, and I made some money betting on the Super Bowl.  That's about all I could ask for, so I'm counting the weekend as a win.

For the rest of you, pick your heads up.  I've always said that I'd rather get blown out than take a close loss. Whatever it was that the Broncos were doing yesterday will be forgotten by Wednesday, whereas the sting of a nail-biting defeat would've stayed with you for months.  And hey, it could've been worse.  Trust me, I marched at 70-3, there's always a worse...

Monday Grab Bag: I need some Advil

I'm suffering from a massive hangover today, and it has nothing to do with what went on at my Super Bowl party.  Nope it's all about the Buffs, and their ugly loss in Salt Lake City.  My body is rejecting the losing toxins, and, as a result, my head is pounding.

Monday Grab Bag: Har-bowl? Super Baugh? Harboughl?

I'm happy for the Harbaugh's.  Their teams looked the best on Sunday, and earned their berths.  I'm certainly happier with San Francisco vs Baltimore then I would've been with yet another New England choke job.  Fresh faces, fresh story-lines. At least we have a full two weeks to have those fresh story-lines thrown in our collective faces! (*sigh*)

Monday Grab Bag: "Your tears Scott, they're so yummy"

The sound of butt-hurt emanating from the Pacific Northwest rang as music to my ears Saturday night.  To get this over with, yes it was a foul.  While most refs would not blow a whistle in that situation, the crew had made a similar tight call on the previous play, which sent Olu Ashaolu to the line for a potential lead.  If the Ashalou play was a foul, then the block on Singler was a foul.

Monday Grab Bag: Superbowl Edition

As America, and particularly the upper Rust Belt, tries to shake off our post-Superbowl hangovers, we can now turn our attentions to the stretch-run of the basketball season, and the quickly approaching baseball season (hooray!).   Today in the bag I'll be delving into the game, the hoopla, and the flat Buffs performance in Columbia on Saturday.

Friday Beer Post: Superbowl edition

I have absolutely no interest in the Superbowl this year.  Not only do I loathe the Green Bay Packers, but I am also growing to hate the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Other than a cheap excuse to stuff my face Sunday evening, the game holds no meaning for me.  That said, the Superbowl is an American institution, and I am nothing if not patriotic.  So there I will be Sunday evening, watching a game that doesn't matter to me in the slightest, and gorging myself on beer and deep-fried foods; it's the American way.

To celebrate this holiest day on the 'Murikun gluttony calendar, I've decided to highlight a beer native to the states of the respective combatants.  Are you going to able to find their beers in time for the game?  I'm betting no.  However, they are local favorites for the fanbases, and I'll honor their tastes.

For Wisconsin I've decided to highlight New Glarus Brewing.  Haven't heard of New Glarus?  Well, I'm not surprised since they're absolutely not available outside of the cheese state.  In fact, a University of Wisconsin fan-bar in NYC nearly had their liquor license revoked for selling the native-Wisconsin favorite Spotted Cow farm house ale.  The only way you're gonna find their brews legally is in Wisconsin.  The only style of their that I've ever tried is their Wisconsin Belgian Red.  It's heavy on the cherries, and is certainly interesting; I'm not really sure if I like it or not, but it's definitely well crafted.  If you ever head to Wisconsin, New Glarus is readily available, and you may want to try some, if only 'cause that's the only time you can.

You won't find this stuff anywhere but the cheese state. 

For Pennsylvania I'd be foolish to overlook the nations oldest operating brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son.  Yuengling, as opposed to New Glarus, is available outside of it's home state, and you might even be able to find some in Colorado if you're lucky.  Starting operations in 1829, Yuegnling began as the Eagle brewery in Pottsville, PA.  The brewery has survived countless recessions, a depression, prohibition, and the mass production of beer from the "big-3."  Since the big-3 aren't even American anymore, they're the second largest American-owned brewery (Behind Boston Brewery).  Their staple brew is their Traditional Lager, and it's a very passable session lager.

Anyways, because of the labor dispute, this may be the final pro football game for a very long time; it better be entertaining.  Go CU-Alum Mason Crosby; I hope big-leg Mace has 20 fieldgoals.

What am I drinking on Sunday?  I'm gonna grab some Denver Pale Ale from Great Divide.  A light and refreshing pale ale, a few of these will serve me well while watching two teams I can't stand play for a title.

Monday Grab Bag

I'm sick at home with some random bug, so I'll hit on a bunch of quick topics.

-Buffs v Missouri

Wow was that a crappy performance. In a situation where you know that a team is going to run you all day (fast break offense, dribble-drive and kick, full-court press, tight man-to-man defense for 40 minutes) you better show up ready to go. But all day, on inbound passes and passes into the block and to the point, the Buffs caught the ball flat-footed. Flat-footed isn't going to beat Missouri. CU also shot the ball like crap, which isn't the norm. I'll take this game with a grain of salt: there was bound to be a letdown after Kansas, and the team did put out a ton of effort to push KU as hard as they did.

-Superbowl

I'm generally pleased the New Orleans Saints won. The game itself, however, was a little boring. No joke, people at my party were falling asleep, and I don't necessarily blame them. The commercials, such as they are, slow the game to a crawl. Normally, that would have been an extremely quick game. With the extended half time (I'll get to that in a second) and commercial breaks it was longer than a normal NFL game. Even Colts DE Dwight Freeney mentioned that the extreme length of the half-time show played into his disappearance in the second half. I just have to keep reminding myself that the Superbowl is not about football fans. Being a football fan watching the Superbowl is like being the groom at a wedding; no one gives a shit what you think.

Can a band with only 2 surviving members still go by the same name? At least led Zeppelin understands that they all need to be there for the name to go up in lights. Anyways, those guys were old (How old were they?). The show wasn't bad, but they've obviously lost their fastball. One thing I did notice was the resemblance of Roger Daltrey to the original "Dr. Who." Check this out:

The only difference is that "Dr. Who" isn't frickin' old. Is it too much to ask that someone who doesn't have an AARP card performs at halftime next year?
