Yesterday, whilst I was trying to have a tame and enjoyable lunch, ESPN came at me with the "news" (and I use that term as loosely as possible) that, according to "sources familiar," good old Brett Favre would listen to My Bears, if contacted, to fill in for injured QB Jay Cutler.
My approximate reaction:
Holy Hell on a Stick! What kind of bullshit "reporter" would waste his journalism degree by dredging up that waste of time. Who thinks that's news? Asking some 87 year old quarterback if he'd like to play isn't news. If there was some Bears source that said there was any level of interest, that may have been worthy of the "Breaking News" treatment afforded the story yesterday afternoon.
The Bears, of course, have no interest in signing a old-ass QB with no remaining arm strength and a penchant for costing his team wins. I could've told you that Sunday night. With a gun to my head I would've unhesitatingly said 'no' to the very notion. The Bears may be quite desperate without the services of Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, but no one is that desperate. The idea is ludicrous.
Was the reporter just bored in the office, and thought that this would be a funny gag to pull on a Monday afternoon? This guy went to a "J" school, right? He didn't just show up one day, asking for a job with a background in physics, or some such nonsense, right?
I'm sure it had something to do with the complete lack of interest shown by the Bears in signing Donovan McNabb. Without one media darling to blather on about, ESPN was desperate for some other "media-friendly" angle to the whole "Jay-Cutler-is-injured-and-Caleb-Hanie-isn't-an-NFL-QB" story. Additionally, I bet the bosses in Bristol had been waiting all season to drag this out when a contender in a big market had a QB go down. Give it up, ESPN. He's gone, and that Golden Goose will lay no more eggs. You'll have to find some other aging warrior to drizzle your jizz over.
What a bunch of whores; does anyone even remember when that place had integrity? This is just a recent example why places such as Yahoo Sports and SBNation are far more reliable and interesting sources for sports news and opinion.
Note: Normally, at some point in the opening paragraph, I'd have done the whole "courtesy thing," and linked to the offending article and named the offending "journalist." However, in this case, with the piece in question being a blatant ploy for cheap hits, and the "journalist" having proven unworthy of any level of courtesy through bald-faced concern trolling, I have chosen not to afford the author, his specific forum, or his article this courtesy. They can suck a bag of dicks.

Artis vs Wallace
Since this is a lazy Wednesday, and I have no shame, I'm going to steal a topic of discussion from AllBuffs.
The word on the street is that the CU basketball program, already boasting a recruiting class ranked by many in the current top-20, has its eyes set on at least one more top-100 caliber player. This focus has fallen on two exciting point guards from, of course, California: Dominic Artis and Tyrone Wallace.
Ty Wallace has been a primary target for CU for quite some time now. He's grabbed interest from a litany of West Coast basketball powers, including the likes of Gonzaga, UNLV, and most of the Pac-12. He's a taller guard, coming in at 6-4, 185, and might develop into a 'tweener', which is not necessarily a bad thing. He's currently ranked in the lower quarter of the top-100 by all the major services.
Dominic Artis, after originally committing to UCLA back in July, backed out earlier this month to re-open his recruiting. According to @YungCoach from Buffscoop, CU jumped on the opportunity provided by his decommitment, and began recruiting him hard. Artis is an electric point guard who has shot up close to the top-50 in many recruiting lists. The 5-11 distributor from Richmond, CA is considered the best PG in the West and is garnering national interest, which is not surprising when you get a look at this tape:
Obviously, as a Buff Basketball junkie, I'm just happy CU is being considered by these kids. It's not every year that CU lands a top-level hoops prospect, let alone a possible trio of top-100 players. I'd be beyond ecstatic if Coach Boyle was able to land either of these guards to round out the class.
That said, I'll take a stab at guessing what will happen. The depressing possibility remains that neither could end up in black and gold, but I'll work under the assumption that Coach Boyle will be able to cap off his already sterling 2012 recruiting class with one of these two outstanding point guards. Artis looks like a phenomenal talent, but I don't see us being able to swoop in and land him; just too late in the game. My best guess is that CU will be able to lock-in Ty Wallace. Not only has CU been in on Wallace longer, but Ty is still scheduled to visit CU (his last scheduled visit) on October 23rd, just two weeks before NLI-day.
The addition of Wallace should be enough to solidify CU's status in the final top-25 recruiting classes, and send shock waves through basketball circles on the west coast. This program is announcing its presence with authority; you're on notice, Pac-12.

Buffalo Chips
Damn, the slowness of this week is painful when compared to the frantic Buff-news pace of the past month. In reaction, I'm doing to old lazy trick of commenting directly on what Ringo and the BDC posted today. Yes, I feel ashamed.
Tyler says he'll be ready for spring ball - Well he better be... just kidding. I just automatically assume that any athlete injured and forced out for the remainder of a season will be perfectly fine come next year; obviously that is not always the case, and its childish to assume so. It sounds like Tyler's doing the work to get himself ready, and is on schedule to return at his 100% for spring ball. As the only incumbent QB with any playing time under his belt, we desperately need Tyler back. I may not be completely satisfied with him as the CU starting QB, but, at this point, he's much better than any alternatives.
Wyoming is back on the basketball schedule - A few years back, a few friends and I made the trek up to Laramie to see the men take on the Pokes. We drove through a damn blizzard that later shut down the interstate to get up there. When we arrived, on the day of Wyo's commencement no less, the bar patrons we ran into prior to the game were shocked to see CU fans there. "We don't even travel from Laramie to see Wyoming/Colorado in basketball." Uh-huh.
I actually enjoyed my brief time in Laramie, which is why I note the restarting of a century-old Front Range basketball rivalry with much applause. I was disappointed when former CU coach Bzdelik dropped all the Mountain Time Zone opponents after his first season. We had been playing DU, Wyoming, and New Mexico before those series got scrubbed (It was really the only thing I ever disagreed with over Bz's tenure; other than the frequency of losses, of course). Happy to see the pokes back on the schedule, and when it comes time for the road trip to Laramie I'll be more than happy to make the trip north again.
Nate Solder is awesome - Named a consensus First-Team All-American on Tuesday, Nate earned his place up on the Press Box Wall. Kudos, Nate. There was a ton of pre-season hype surrounding the gigantic tackle from Buena Vista, and, impressively, he lived up to it. I was really hoping he'd become CU's first Outland Trophy winner, but becoming the latest in the long line of Buff's celebrated as All American football stars is a hell of an achievement. Now all that's left in his college career is earning an early 1st-round draft selection (While they will end up picking late, the Bears could use a lot of O-line help *cough* *cough*).
Cal game still potentially on 2011 schedule - I highly doubt it, but Ringo went and ruminated about the game. We desperately need a 5th home game on the schedule (not only for money reasons, but the 8 games away from Folsom will really hurt the team next year), and I think keeping the Cal game has to be plan 43(f). Any 1-AA team, really any at all, will do here. Keeping Cal on the schedule sets us up for a extremly rough schedule, as opposed to just a damn tough one.
If you desperately want to avoid the 1-AA route, there are D-1 solutions. What are the MAC schools doing? Miami Ohio owes us from trading us for a stupid neutral-site game with Kentucky (and sticking us with a shit-tacular road-trip to Toledo). What about Idaho? They suck. Might they be needing a game? How about BYU? They're down on their on-field luck and needing to plug 7 holes in next year's schedule. How bout a Big East school. They all suck, but would make for an interesting opponent. Let's make this happen, South Florida (Would un-officially be the Darrell Scott Bowl)
